Eighty Acres Farms and Soli Organic have agreed to merge in a deal that creates one of the largest indoor farming networks in the US, as the controlled environment sector seeks scale after years of technical progress and financial strain.

The combined group will integrate Eighty Acres’ automated growing systems with Soli Organic’s long horticultural history and its established retail partnerships. Together they plan to produce about 20mn pounds of leafy greens a year and supply more than 17,000 stores nationwide. The move marks a shift from independent vertical farm sites to a more coordinated platform intended to support steady output and longer term expansion.

Executives said the merger would accelerate product development and broaden the group’s reach to US households. Industry analysts see the deal as an attempt to stabilise a sector known for advanced technology but mixed commercial results. By pooling expertise in cultivation, software and distribution, the companies aim to cut costs and raise productivity, two hurdles that have slowed wider adoption of indoor farming.

Grocers have increased demand for reliable year round suppliers as extreme weather and supply chain interruptions weigh on traditional agriculture. Indoor facilities can deliver consistent harvests with limited exposure to drought, heat or transport delays. The combined network positions the new entity to serve this demand at a scale that few US operators have yet achieved.

Challenges remain. High energy use continues to pressure operating margins, and some producers have streamlined activities to stay competitive. AeroFarms, for example, recently restructured and narrowed its product range to reinforce its position in the market.

Still, investors and industry participants view the tie up as a sign that indoor farming is moving from early stage experimentation to a more established infrastructure model. Further consolidation and capital investment are expected as operators seek greater efficiency and geographic reach.

For now, the partnership between Eighty Acres and Soli Organic sets a new marker for the sector and offers a test of whether scale can deliver the resilience and economics that indoor farming has long promised.
