Canopii's robotic Oregon greenhouse just completed its first commercial harvest, launching a seed round to build hyper-local farms across the US

A small agtech company in Oregon has achieved something that has eluded far better funded rivals. It has grown crops from seed to harvest without human labor and kept costs grounded in reality.
Canopii announced on March 12, 2026 that its robotic greenhouse in Hubbard completed its first commercial harvest. The facility is now supplying herbs and specialty greens across the Willamette Valley, while the company opens a seed funding round to expand, beginning with a site planned for downtown Portland.
The timing is notable. Indoor agriculture in the United States has been shaken by high profile failures, with investors retreating after years of heavy losses. Canopii has taken a quieter path, raising just $3.6 million, much of it from National Science Foundation grants, and spending five years refining a single working system before seeking outside capital.
That system is built for efficiency. Each greenhouse fits within the space of a basketball court, runs on standard household power, and uses a closed-loop hydroponic setup connected to a single water source. From that compact footprint, it can produce up to 40,000 pounds of herbs and leafy greens each year, operating autonomously once installed.
The business model hinges on distance, or rather the lack of it. By placing farms near cities instead of relying on cross-country shipments, Canopii targets transport and refrigeration costs that make up roughly 30% of produce prices. Early interest from schools, restaurants, and casinos suggests demand for fresher, local supply.
Funding from the seed round will go toward building more units and scaling operations. The company also plans a franchise model, allowing operators to deploy standardized greenhouses across the country, much like a manufacturing network designed for consistency.
With the US vertical farming market projected to grow steadily through the end of the decade, Canopii’s measured, automation-first approach may offer a reset. After a turbulent period, indoor farming could be entering a more disciplined and durable phase.
