AeroFarms, Gotham Greens, and 80 Acres push US vertical farming toward greater scale and discipline
11 Dec 2025

Vertical farming companies in the US are entering a period marked by consolidation and closer scrutiny, following years of rapid expansion. Producers are focusing on operational stability and cost control as they work to demonstrate that controlled-environment systems can supply retailers at commercial scale.
Recent steps by three established operators show the sector’s shift. AeroFarms has rebuilt its position after a difficult period by simplifying its operations and prioritising gradual growth over aggressive expansion. Gotham Greens is continuing to add greenhouse sites with the support of new funding, extending its reach across the country without signalling further transactions next year. Meanwhile, 80 Acres Farms is strengthening its retail ties and deploying new technologies designed to improve efficiency across major supply chains. Together, these moves point to an industry moving from experimentation to more predictable production.
Analysts note that competitive advantage now depends on reliability and steady output. With consolidation still unfolding, growers are seeking the scale and partnerships needed to offer produce at consistent prices. Agriculture adviser John White said the sector “is maturing in real time” as companies streamline operations and secure strategic allies.
Challenges remain, including high energy costs and pressure to show sustained profitability. Yet recent mergers, restructurings and facility upgrades are viewed by many insiders as signs of resilience. Retailers appear to support this view, favouring suppliers able to guarantee freshness, traceability and uninterrupted deliveries.
The market is emerging as one shaped by operational discipline and incremental innovation. As producers invest in automation, refine production systems and deepen commercial relationships, vertical farming is gaining a firmer position in the US food supply. The decisions made in the current phase are likely to influence how fresh produce reaches consumers in the years ahead.
