80 Acres Farms and Soli Organic have agreed to merge, creating one of the largest controlled-environment farming networks in the US as the sector seeks firmer commercial footing. The combined group plans to supply thousands of retail outlets and produce millions of pounds of greens and herbs each year in an effort to bring indoor agriculture further into the mainstream.

The deal links 80 Acres Farms’ automated growing systems with Soli Organic’s horticultural expertise after a period of uneven performance across the industry. Executives from both companies said the aim was to build a more resilient model that can deliver fresher produce with fewer supply chain disruptions. Mike Zelkind, co-founder of 80 Acres Farms, described the move as a response to a “fast-shifting food landscape”.

Analysts view the merger as part of a broader consolidation cycle in indoor farming, where operators face high energy costs and complex distribution demands. Some observers argue that larger alliances may help stabilise production and strengthen links with retailers seeking consistent volumes of pesticide-free crops.

The scale of the new entity has prompted debate inside the sector. Industry participants warn that smaller growers could struggle to compete with a group that combines advanced technology, established operations and long-standing retail relationships. Others contend that consolidation could support the industry by raising performance standards and attracting further investment.

Investors and policymakers are expected to monitor the rollout closely as the new venture expands its network. Its progress may influence future partnerships and shape the role of vertical and indoor farming in the US food system, marking a cautious but more confident phase for the maturing industry.
